Why does the PieceWalk make a difference?
The PieceWalk was born to give Oklahoma families affected by autism a day of togetherness, a day to support awareness in our state, and a means to support Oklahoma autism programs. With over 6,000 walkers and 500 runners participating in the event each year, it is the largest autism event in our state. Year after year we hear what a difference it makes to our local Oklahoma families to have a day of our own where no one is judged and melt downs are expected and not frowned upon. The PieceWalk Resource Fair provides a way for families to learn about autism supports, therapies, products, and services that are offered in our state. And most importantly, the event includes entertainment for everyone with face-painting, fun characters, music, and fun tables. There is something for everyone!
The Big Question - What Do We Do With The Money Raised by the PieceWalk?
100% of the PieceWalk funds are used for autism programming in Oklahoma.
Paying it forward is a fundamental philosophy of AutismOklahoma.org. Over the past 2 years, we have awarded $87,500 in grants from monies raised by the PieceWalk. Our recipients include public universities in Oklahoma that provide research and education, private schools, public entities, parent support groups, and organizations that provide assistive communication devices. All of our recipients provide quality programs that will improve life in Oklahoma for kids with autism. The Oklahoma Statewide Autism Conference is another key beneficiary of Autism Oklahoma. Since 2009, Autism Oklahoma has donated $33,000 to this annual education event. It is an honor to be a part of these projects and have a front row seat to see the results! You can see more information on our website.
Funds from our 2013 PieceWalk will be used to provide autism programs in Oklahoma including family support groups, projects for individuals with autism, summer camps, autism awareness and community grants. AutismOklahoma.org is a statewide 501c3 organization that is 100% funded by donations. Our goal is to bring hope and empowerment to families affected by autism while helping Oklahoma become more autism aware. We do this by providing programs that focus on helping families, providing specific programs for persons with autism, and providing awareness and outreach in communities within Oklahoma.
